Time to jump on the COLBERT and run a few miles

Demonstrating yet again that even rocket scientists have a sense of humor, NASA has christened the treadmill that will reside in the new node of the International Space Station the COLBERT (Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill). I swear there must be an entire building at the Johnson Space Center filled with a team a folks who do nothing other than create new acronyms.

Another reason to avoid high fructose corn syrup

High fructose corn syrup (HFCP) is a near-ubiquitous ingredient in modern prepared foods.  Pretty much in lieu of sugar, food manufactures use HFCP.  It contributes greatly to our national epidemics of obesity and diabetes.  And if that wasn't bad enough, a recent study in the scientific journal Environmental Health found that almost half of the samples tested had high levels of mercury.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that mercury is bad.  It cause also source of neurological and physiological disorders, and worst of all it is bio-accumulative, which means your body absorbs it much faster than it can get rid of it.  So long-term exposure to small amounts can build up to toxic levels.  Yikes.

My first thought on reading this article was "I don't eat much HFCP, right?"  I tend to stay away from non-diet sodas, rarely eat candy bars or pre-processes snack items (cookies, etc.).  Well, I am a big fan of Fiber One bars, which a close inspection of the label reveals, you guessed it, high fructose corn syrup.  Even ketchup is laden with HFCP.  Who needs sweetened ketchup?  So yet another reason to eat home-cooked fat-laden means rather than McDonald's fat laden meals.
